City of God
The City of God (De Civitate Dei) by St. Augustine is one of the most important works in Catholic theology and Western philosophy. Written between 413 and 426 AD, it was Augustine’s response to the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410 AD. Many Romans blamed Christianity for the Empire's decline, believing the old pagan gods had been abandoned.
Purpose and Theme
St. Augustine wrote The City of God to refute this charge and to offer a profound vision of history shaped by divine providence. He distinguishes between two cities:
The City of Man, built on love of self to the contempt of God, characterized by pride, lust for power, and worldly glory.
The City of God, built on love of God to the contempt of self, characterized by humility, peace, and eternal truth.
Structure
The work is divided into 22 books:
Books 1–10: Refute pagan religion and philosophy, arguing that the pagan gods brought no true salvation or moral guidance.
Books 11–22: Lay out the origin, development, and destiny of the two cities.
Key Themes
Divine Providence: History is under God’s control, even when earthly kingdoms rise and fall.
Earthly Suffering: Christians should not be scandalized by temporal suffering or political instability.
True Citizenship: Our ultimate home is not on earth but in heaven; Christians live as pilgrims in this world.
Critique of Pagan Morality: Augustine analyzes Roman virtues and uncovers their corruption by pride and self-love.
Final Judgment: The two cities will be fully separated at the Last Judgment.
Famous Quotes
“Two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God; the heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self.” (Book 14)
“God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.”
If you're looking to engage with The City of God from a Traditional Catholic perspective, it provides a powerful foundation for resisting modern secularism and relativism. Augustine’s vision calls Catholics to set their sights on the eternal city, not to put their trust in political ideologies, and to live as faithful witnesses in a fallen world.
